How to Create a Good Impression
The definition of Rapport is simply
“A friendly and harmonious relationship”.
I’m sure you have heard, “You never get a second chance to make a good first impression.” and you will likely hear this again and again because it's very true. A bad first impression can rarely be remedied, and even if it can, it's going to take a lot of work. To be successful, it is vital that those who have cause to connect with you, receive the very best impression each time they come in contact with you.
Everyone you come into contact with will be forming their opinions of you and getting to know you over the first few encounters. Be mindful of how you are projecting yourself during that time. Someone once told me, we never know how we’re being perceived by others unless we ask, or they tell us. Both scenarios are unlikely, so the sooner you become self-aware of yourself and your actions, the better.
Here are some things you can do to help control how you are being perceived by others.
Smiling
It sounds simple, but a smile goes a long way. If you naturally have an RBF (Resting Bitch Face), you likely are well aware of this so keep an eye on it. It can be easy to zone out and stare into space but if you are at a networking event, or meeting a client, this signals that you are uninterested and bored. No one wants to feel that they bore you. Always greet them with a genuine smile. If you’re talking to them on the phone, smile while you do so. They may not be able to see you, but they can hear the smile in your voice. Practice in front of the mirror and try speaking without a smile and then again with one and notice the difference.
Be Polite
Chances are you were raised with morals and taught some type of manners. If you’re rude, impolite, and discourteous; you will not be liked and they will not buy from you, regardless of how amazing or affordable your product is. No one wants to work with someone they dislike, period.
Dress Well
While you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, people will judge you based on what you wear, your grooming appearance, and even what you drive! I’m not saying you have to have the most expensive cars or clothes, but you should look presentable and your style should match the profession.
Grooming
Look your best and smelling good is also very important. Make sure your breath is also in good shape, always keep mints handy and pop one in before your meeting. Mints are also good ice breakers!
Stay Focused and Attentive
It can be hard to stay focused with so many distractions at our fingertips, but you must train yourself to be present. Keep your phone and computer away when possible. If you are having a face to face meeting, take notes on paper and type them up later. Even if you’re typing notes, you can easily wander your way to a blog or Instagram and distract yourself.
Do Your Research
Do some research ahead of time. Look into the company and person. See if they have a LinkedIn account and investigate their background. See if there is anything you can be relatable and use that in your conversations.
Body Language
Be mindful of your body language. Something as small as crossing your arms can give off a negative impression. Slouching in your chair is another example of bad body language.
