Thriving Through the Coronavirus: Eight Ways to Remain Positive
Things are all changing quickly and everyday life is starting to look very different. This could be the beginning, only time will really tell so we'll have to wait and see. It's important to remain grounded and positive, don't let something like this throw you too far off course.
The first thing you can do is focus on what you can control. Something you can control and something you should put into practice every day is self-care. Here are some self-care tips to help you remain positive during this time.
WRITE DOWN FIVE GOOD THINGS EVERY DAY
Sometime during the day, write down when something good happens. You can either do this in real-time or wait until the end of the day and compile a complete list. This doesn’t have to be something big, it can even be as small as “the sun was shining and I was able to go out on a short walk today”. Finding the good in each day helps you stay present and lessens your anxiety in the unknown by putting your attention elsewhere.
HAVE A DANCE PARTY
Stop what you’re doing, put on some good music and dance it out. It might sound silly but this is a great way to break up your day and let out a little frustration in a good way. You may also be stuck inside alone and if that's the case, dance like no one is watching!
GET PLENTY OF SLEEP AND WATER
During stressful times it can be hard to sleep, but following your normal sleep routine during times of change can help you to feel more like yourself. Try to get 7-8 hours of sleep every night, turning off the electronic devices at least an hour or so before going to sleep. Drinking water is also important, I know it can be tempting to drink a few extra glasses of wine but that will only add to your stress levels, not help them.
START EACH DAY WITH SOMETHING PLEASANT
Think of something that brings you joy, it can be very simple. I start each day walking my dogs and meditation. Getting outside and walking my dogs always starts my day off on a positive note and that helps set the tone for the rest of the day. This also gives me something to look forward to each morning.
LIMIT YOUR INTAKE OF SOCIAL MEDIA
This one can be hard, especially now. We want to know whats going on and sites like Twitter and Facebook can help us get the information quickly. This may also lead to a lot of false information which will lead to induced panic and increased anxiety. Limit how much of your day you spend on these sites and only follow trusted sources.
WATCH CONTENT THAT IS FUNNY AND UPLIFTING
If and when you do get on social media, follow accounts that are positive and up-lifting. There are plenty of news pages giving you things you need to know but throw in a dog or cute otter account every now and then. A few of my favorite accounts to follow on Instagram for uplifting new are @upworthy and @goodnews_movement.
STAY IN TOUCH WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS
Technology allows for endless options to stay in touch with family and friends. Call, text, video chat, iMessage, Google Hangouts, WhatsApp, the options are endless. Follow more of their accounts on social media to break up the heaviness of the news. Contact them more often than usual and tell them how much you love them.
MOVE YOUR BODY EVERY DAY
Don’t forget to exercise! It’s likely your usual gym is closed but transition your workouts to home-based ones instead. This can be accomplished by a quick Google search. This could also be a good time to change up your workout, try some calming yoga or pilates in your living room. Exercise is a great way to lift your mood and help things to feel a little more normal.
